LETTERS FROM OUR AWARD WINNERS

Marjorie Spiriliotis (2007), DePaul University
I am writing this letter today to thank you deeply and to tell you how grateful I am for all you have done for me. I know it has already been a month since the Awards Gala, but I have been overloaded with school homework and finals and did not have enough time to sit down and thank you appropriately. However, you must know that neither a month nor a lifetime will be enough to forget what you have undertaken to enable me to pursue my education.

...I have to say that on the evening of the Gala, I was even more gladly surprised to meet with this whole Hellenic community of scholars and other benefactors who cared about our education and future.

I have experienced the strength and the influence of communities in Greek villages many times. This tight and amicable atmosphere is the main reason why I feel at home in Greece and also why my origins are so important to me. And on the day of the Gala, I encountered the same kind of community. The one that works towards your future well-being, the one that protects you and helps you.

Nonetheless, there was one difference between the two. Indeed, you did not just offer me a basket of fruits or a piece of meat for the week, your community sees further than that. Your community seeks for a spiritual and intellectual involvement that will last a lifetime.

Because I believe in the power of culture and education, I sincerely hope that like you, I will one day be able to help other students realize their dreams and acquire the education and the knowledge they deserve to become the future responsible and cultured citizens of our planet.

So thank you again for your work and devotion, you must know that I will never forget the support you provided to me this year and that I will never thank you enough.
